Trail Description

The Skyline Trail on Cape Breton Island is a must-do hike for anyone seeking stunning coastal views without a grueling climb. While the hike is officially rated as moderate, it’s actually pretty easy until the boardwalk at the turnaround point.

Located in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Eastern Canada, this well-maintained, mostly flat trail is ideal for families with children. Overall, it shouldn’t take you more than 2-3 hours to complete.

And if you’re looking for the perfect photo op, you’ll definitely find it here. The highlight of the hike are the views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the winding Cabot Trail from the iconic boardwalk. The views of the coastline are absolutely stunning!

However, the boardwalk does include 263 steps down to the coastline, which can be challenging on windy days. As a result, this trail is not really appropriate for people with mobility issues or those pushing strollers.

While the steps are optional, the full experience is worth the effort—just be prepared for a cardio workout on the way back up! Fortunately, there are benches along the boardwalk where you can take breaks along the way. Plus, the views make it well worth the effort.

There are also pretty good chances of spotting marine and wildlife on this hike. From moose to whales, bald eagles and even bears, you never know what you might see!

Best Time to Visit

The Skyline Trail is accessible year-round, but visitor services are only available from mid-May to late October.

The best time to hike is mid-summer to early fall, when the weather is pleasant and there are fewer bugs. However, this is also the busiest time of year, and during peak hours (11 am to 4 pm), Parks Canada may temporarily close the trail if it reaches capacity.

Late spring and early summer are also beautiful times to visit, but be prepared for black flies—bug spray is a must!

If you prefer to avoid the crowds, consider hiking from late October to early May. During this time, the trail is quieter, but winter conditions may require snowshoes or crampons, and you’ll need to dress appropriately for the cold weather.

Leave No Trace

You must pack out all trash and stay on designated trails to protect the delicate coastal ecosystem on the Skyline Trail.
