Trail Description
Niagara Falls may be famous for its towering waterfalls, but it’s also home to some surprisingly rugged hiking trails — especially on the U.S. side of the border. The Devil’s Hole and Whirlpool Rapids Trail is a local favourite for those looking to break a sweat while soaking in the raw power of the Niagara River.
This out-and-back route takes you deep into the Niagara Gorge, where you’ll walk alongside swirling rapids and towering cliffs. While much of the trail is relatively flat, don’t let that fool you — you’ll face a steep staircase descent and climb of almost 1000 feet, along with rocky, uneven terrain near the water’s edge.
The trail isn’t ideal for dogs or inexperienced hikers, but if you’re up for the challenge, you’ll be rewarded with close-up views of the Class V rapids, a quieter side of Niagara few visitors ever see, and some of the best natural scenery in the region.
Note: A section of the trail between the Devil’s Hole Stairs and Whirlpool Stairs is currently closed due to a rockslide. Be sure to check the New York State Parks website for the latest conditions before heading out.
If this trail feels a little too intense, you can opt for nearby alternatives like the Niagara Gorge Rim and Whirlpool Rapids Trail or the Devil’s Hole and Niagara Gorge Trail Loop — both offer similar views with about half the elevation gain.

Practical Information
Parking
Parking is available at Devil’s Hole State Park and Whirlpool State Park. Both have paved lots, but they can fill up quickly on weekends and holidays — arrive early if visiting during peak times.
Facilities
Restrooms are available seasonally (mid-April through late October) at Whirlpool State Park. Devil’s Hole has limited facilities, mainly scenic overlooks and trail access.
Opening Hours
Open year-round from dawn to dusk, but trail conditions may vary depending on weather and seasonal closures.
Fees
Trail access and parking are free.
Dogs
Leashed dogs (up to 6 ft) are allowed, but due to steep stairs and rocky terrain, this hike is not ideal for most dogs.
Trail Conditions
Expect uneven rocky paths, steep stair sections, and possible flooding near the river. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and check for closures before visiting.
Best Time to Visit
Late spring through fall offers the most reliable trail conditions and is generally considered the best time to visit Niagara Falls. Avoid visiting after heavy rain or snowfall when the lower trail can be slippery or unsafe.
Leave No Trace
Always stay on marked trails, pack out all trash, and respect park rules and signage.
