Trail Description

The Bonticou Crag trail in New York State’s Hudson Valley is a local favorite for its mix of easy woodland trails, exciting terrain, and sweeping panoramic views. Located within the privately managed Mohonk Preserve, this short loop packs a lot into a relatively modest distance.

The trail starts at the Spring Farm Trailhead, where you’ll find a parking lot and washroom facilities. Entry to the preserve requires a $15 USD day-use fee, which helps maintain the trails and facilities.

Most of the loop follows well-marked carriage roads and forest paths. However, the trail’s standout feature is the rock scramble—a thrilling, hands-on ascent up a near-vertical pile of boulders that leads to the summit of the Crag. While it’s a fun challenge for adventurous hikers, it’s not ideal for those with a fear of heights or for most dogs.

Thankfully, you can still enjoy the summit without scrambling. An alternate route loops around to the top via a more gradual path, which is the standard descent but can also be used for the ascent.

Once at the summit, you’re treated to stunning views across the forested Mohonk Preserve and the wider Hudson Valley. The flat rock expanse at the top makes a perfect spot to take a break, snap photos, or enjoy a picnic.

If you’re up for a longer hike, consider adding on the short detour to Table Rocks. This scenic viewpoint features striking rock ledges with dramatic drop-offs and sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. It’s a great way to add more adventure to your Bonticou Crag hike without too much extra effort.

While the main loop is fairly short, the preserve features many interconnected trails if you’re looking to extend your hike. Or you can simply descend the loop and head back to your starting point.
