Trail Description

Although Acadia Mountain isn’t the tallest peak in Acadia National Park, it offers some of the best views on the East Coast—especially for the effort required. This 2.5-mile loop is a moderately challenging hike that rewards you with stunning summit vistas over Somes Sound and the surrounding islands.

The trail begins directly across the street from the Acadia Mountain parking lot. From here, you have two route options: either start on the St. Sauveur Mountain Trail and turn left at the Acadia Mountain Trail junction, or head north along the roadside trail and turn right onto the “Man o’ War” dirt road to reach the trailhead.

The ascent is short but steep in parts, climbing through shaded forest before opening up to two spectacular viewpoints at the summit. On the way down, you can take a short detour to the Man o’ War Brook Waterfall, which flows into the ocean below—a scenic bonus that’s well worth the few extra minutes.

The hike should only take 1 to 2 hours to complete, and the trail is beautiful year-round. Although, it’s especially scenic in summer and fall when sunny skies and colorful foliage brighten the landscape.
