Quebec City or Montreal: Which is Better?

Quebec City vs. Montreal: Which City Should You Visit?
Are you trying to decide whether to visit Quebec City or Montreal? Both these cities have tons to offer and, as I’ve visited them both, I can tell you all about why you might want to visit one over the other.
In this post I’ve put together everything you need to know about Quebec City vs. Montreal, to help you choose the destination that suits you best. So, read on to find out which one you should visit!
Is Quebec City or Montreal Better?
When planning a trip to Quebec, one of the toughest decisions is choosing whether to visit Quebec City or Montreal.
Largely out of convenience, I visited Montreal several times before I had the chance to go to Quebec City. As I live in Toronto, Montreal is only a 5-hour drive for me (compared to the 8 hours each way to Quebec City). Plus it’s close to Mont-Tremblant, which is one of my favourite places for skiing and snowboarding in Canada.
But, as Quebec City has always interested me, this summer I finally made the trip, and it was definitely worth the few extra hours of driving!

Although this doesn’t mean I would choose Quebec City over Montreal again in the future. While both are beautiful places steeped in history and culture, despite their similarities they actually each offer very different experiences. As such, they can appeal to different types of travellers.
Quebec City has much more Old-World charm than Montreal. Its cobblestone streets, historic architecture and distinctly European vibe really transports you to the heart of France. Whereas, while Montreal also has a strong French influence, it’s a much larger and bustling city with more diversity, seamlessly blending its European heritage with modern innovation and amenities.

Deciding which city is better ultimately comes down to what kind of experience you’re looking for. If you’re more drawn to the romance and charm of European architecture and culture, then Quebec City will likely suit you best. Or, if its the lively energy of a big city that you’re after, then Montreal definitely won’t disappoint!
But these aren’t the only reasons to choose one city over the other. So, let’s dive into more detail about Montreal vs. Quebec City.
Reasons to Visit Montreal
Montreal is a city that seamlessly blends the old with the new, making it one of Canada’s most vibrant and dynamic destinations. It’s one of the most fun cities I’ve been to, with so much to see and do. Whether you’re a foodie, history buff, or an arts enthusiast, I guarantee Montreal will have something for you!
Food Scene
Above all else, Montreal is known for its incredible food. From world-class restaurants and bustling markets to iconic specialties like Montreal style bagels, smoked meat and poutine, you’ll find Canada’s best food in Montreal.
Plus, the city’s French influence is evident in its bakeries, bistros, and fine dining establishments, making it a fantastic place to enjoy a taste of Europe.
And it’s not just the French who have influenced Montreal’s food scene. The city is also a haven for street food and other international cuisine, including Caribbean, Portuguese and Middle Eastern food, with options to satisfy any budget and palate.

Arts & Culture
Montreal is also a cultural hub, with some of Canada’s best museums, live music venues and theatres. The city also hosts countless festivals and events throughout the year. Whether it’s the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, or the many street festivals, art exhibitions and concerts, there’s always something happening in the city.
And Montreal’s diverse neighbourhoods – each with their own unique vibe and heritage – also add to the city’s cultural richness.
For old world charm and history, visit Old Montreal with its quaint cobblestone streets and beautiful architecture dating as far back as the 17th century. Or, explore other trendy neighbourhoods like Plateau-Mont-Royal and Mile End for street art, vintage stores, indie boutiques, and to see colourful townhouses featuring Montreal’s quintessential external staircases.

Lively Atmosphere
Finally, Montreal’s lively atmosphere is infectious. The city’s blend of European charm and North American energy creates a unique vibe that keeps visitors coming back time and time again.
Whether you’re strolling along the waterfront at the Old Port, enjoying the views from the top of Mount Royal, or exploring the city’s diverse neighbourhoods, Montreal offers an experience that’s both cosmopolitan and quintessentially Canadian.

Reasons to Visit Quebec City
Visiting Quebec City feels like stepping into a European fairy tale. With its historic charm, storied past, and beautiful architecture, it’s easy to see why this treasured city attracts so many visitors from around the world.
Historic Old Town
One of the top reasons to visit Quebec City over Montreal is its beautifully preserved Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cobblestone streets, centuries-old buildings, and charming boutiques transport you back in time.
Plus, Quebec City is North America’s only fortified city, complete with towers, gates and cannons! Once used as the city’s defensive system, you can now walk along the 4.6 kilometre (2.9 mile) ramparts to take in some of the city’s most significant sites and learn about Canada’s rich history.

Within the fortified walls, the iconic Château Frontenac sits perched high above Old Quebec, as a symbol of the city’s history and grandeur. In fact, it’s Quebec City’s most recognizable landmark, and the most photographed hotel in the world!
And, down below are the picturesque and narrow streets of Quartier Petit Champlain. Here, you’ll find plenty of quaint cafés, artisan shops, and stunning old world architecture to explore.
French Culture
Since founding French Canada, Quebec City has managed to retain most of its French heritage – so much so that you could easily forget you’re actually in North America.
From the language to the cuisine, the city truly immerses you in French culture. In fact, it’s amazing how similar Quebec City is to a French town. And I should know, as I used to live in France!

Throughout the city you’ll find hundreds of bistros and traditional restaurants serving authentic French and Quebecois dishes. And the bread, pastries and French specialties taste just as good as the ones in France.
So, if you’re looking to experience French culture, but aren’t able to make it all the way to France, Quebec City is the absolute best place to visit.
Pro Tip: Don’t worry if you don’t speak French, as most locals in the tourist areas also speak English.
Picturesque Setting
Finally, another compelling reason to visit Quebec City is its picturesque setting along the St. Lawrence River. The city’s layout with its dramatic cliffs overlooking the river offers stunning views and endless photo ops.
Whether you’re exploring the historic Battlefields Park, taking a ferry ride across the river, or simply enjoying the panoramic views from Dufferin Terrace, Quebec City has plenty of natural beauty to take in.

Which City Would I Choose?
So, after visiting both Quebec City and Montreal, which city do I prefer? Truth be told, it’s really hard to choose!
But, if I had to pick one, for a first time visit to Quebec I would recommend Montreal.
Montreal is the bigger city, so it has a much wider range of things to see and do. And, while Montreal might not be quite as old-world as Quebec City, the Old Town still dates back to the 17th century and has its own fair share of French influence and European charm.
However, if I was looking to escape the city life for a few days, or have a romantic weekend away, I’d definitely choose to visit Quebec City over Montreal. The city is just so beautiful it really is hard to beat. And it’s not as fast paced as Montreal, so if you’re looking to relax and unwind it will suit you better.
Recommendation: Visit Quebec City AND Montreal in The Same Trip
Why choose between Quebec City and Montreal when you can experience both on the same trip?
Both cities offer a glimpse into Quebec’s rich history and culture, each with its own unique attractions and appeal. So, for the most well-rounded and complete Quebec experience, I recommend visiting both!

And fortunately, since they’re only 3 hours apart by car or train, it’s actually quite easy to fit both cities into the one trip.
As the bigger of the two cities, there is more to see and do in Montreal. So this is where I would recommend starting your trip. Then, you can either take a day trip to Quebec City, or head there for a couple of nights to fully explore the city and surrounding region.
By visiting both cities you’ll get to experience the best of Quebec’s diverse offerings, immerse yourself in the province’s unique culture, learn about its fascinating history, and indulge in its delicious food.

Final Thoughts on Quebec City vs. Montreal
So, which is better, Montreal or Quebec City? This will ultimately depend on your own preferences and what type of travel experience you’re looking for!
If you’re looking for a lively getaway with endless attractions, food and entertainment options, then Montreal will be your best bet. This diverse city has the perfect mix of historic charm, modern amenities and European influence, for an extremely well-rounded experience.
Whereas Quebec City is the ideal destination if you’re looking for a slightly quieter and more relaxing getaway. Plus, its European charm makes it perfect for a romantic weekend break, indulging in delicious French food, browsing artisanal boutiques, and getting lost along the city’s picturesque laneways.
However, if time permits, in my opinion the absolute best way to experience Quebec is to visit both Montreal and Quebec City. And fortunately it’s possible to do this in the same trip.
