Trail Description

Located in North Carolina along the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, the Mount Mitchell Trail leads to the highest summit east of the Mississippi, standing at 6,684 feet (2,037 meters). This challenging hike is a rite of passage for East Coast hikers, offering a steep climb with plenty of switchbacks.

Most of the trail winds through forest, and the Parkway is often shrouded in cloud—so while the views aren’t guaranteed, bragging rights for making it to the top are!

And, on clear days, the summit rewards you with sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains. Plus, the forested landscape is especially stunning in fall, when the foliage turns fiery shades of red, orange, and gold.

This hike starts at the Black Mountain Campground, where there’s a large parking lot. Once inside the campground, follow the South Toe River to your left. The trail is very well-marked.

The full hike typically takes 6 to 8 hours round trip, depending on your pace. Although, if you’re short on time or energy, you can hike up and take a shuttle back down to the parking lot. The shuttle requires a small fee and must be reserved at least a day in advance.

Practical Information

Parking

The trail begins at the Black Mountain Campground, where there’s a large parking lot near the trailhead.

Park Fees

There is no fee to hike the trail. A small fee applies if using the shuttle from the summit back to the campground—reserve at least one day in advance.

Facilities

Restrooms are available at the campground. There are no amenities along the trail, so bring everything you’ll need for the day.

Opening Hours

The trail is accessible year-round, but the summit area may close during winter due to weather. Check Blue Ridge Parkway alerts before heading out.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed on the trail but must be kept on a leash at all times.

Trail Conditions

The trail is rugged and steep with some rocky sections and switchbacks, and a stream crossing which may result in wet feet. So it’s a good idea to wear waterproof hiking boots or pack extra socks. Plus, rain is common in the park, so it’s also worth bringing a poncho or rain jacket.

Best Time to Visit

Fall is particularly scenic due to the foliage, but late spring through early fall generally offers the best trail conditions.

Leave No Trace

Make sure to pack out all trash, stay on marked trails, and respect any wildlife you might encounter.
