Trail Description
Florida might be better known for its beaches, theme parks, and water sports like boating and parasailing, but it’s also home to some seriously underrated hiking. The Aucilla Sinks section of the Florida Trail proves just how weird and wonderful Florida’s landscapes can be.
Part of the 1,500-mile (2,400-km) Florida Trail, this segment stands out for its unique geology and mysterious, disappearing river.
Starting from the Aucilla Sinks Trailhead, this moderate out-and-back hike winds through dense palmetto and hardwood forest before revealing its star attractions — a string of mysterious sinkholes, where the Aucilla River dips in and out of sight as it travels underground.
The result is a surreal, ever-changing trail that feels like a geology lesson in motion. You’ll see the river vanish beneath your feet, reappear in unexpected places, and flow along steep banks lined with lush vegetation. The final stretch leads toward Nutall Rise, where the river finally resurfaces for good.
Despite the swampy surroundings, the trail is dry for most of the year, especially during Florida’s cooler months. That makes February through March the ideal time to visit — with pleasant weather, fewer bugs, and solid trail conditions.
Just be aware: seasonal hunting is permitted in this area. Always check for hunting dates before your hike, and wear bright orange to stay visible and safe.
