Trail Description
The Catawba Falls trail is one of western North Carolina’s most scenic and accessible waterfall hikes — and it recently reopened with major upgrades. Located just 30 minutes from Asheville and under 2 hours from Charlotte, it’s a great option for hikers of all abilities, including families.
The hike begins on the River Trail, a relatively easy 1.8 km (1.1 mi) path that winds alongside the river, past small cascades and the remains of a historic hydroelectric dam, before arriving at the base of the Lower Falls.
From here, you can continue up a steep 580-step staircase — equivalent to a 30-storey building — to reach a series of new viewing decks at the Upper Falls. It’s a short but demanding climb, with benches along the way to catch your breath. And, to cool down, swimming is permitted in the plunge pool at the Upper Falls (but not at the Lower Falls).
Alternatively, the Ridge Trail offers a more gradual 3.4 km (2.1 mi) route to the Upper Falls. You can even combine both trails to form a 5.6 km (3.5 mi) loop, with forested scenery and multiple waterfall views along the way.
Other short add-ons include the Wildflower Trail (400 m / 0.25 mi), a peaceful spur that leads directly to the Lower Falls.

The new infrastructure makes the area more accessible and safer than before, though the stairs to the Upper Falls are metal and serrated — not ideal for small or sensitive dog paws. If you’re hiking with a pup, consider taking the Ridge Trail instead.
Whether you hike just to the base of the falls or complete the full loop, you’ll be rewarded with stunning waterfall views, lush forest, and a chance to explore one of North Carolina’s most beautiful trail systems.

Tips for Hiking Catawba Falls
- Arrive early to get parking and beat the crowds.
- Bring water and snacks if planning to do the loop.
- Take your time on the 580 steps — benches are available for breaks.
- If hiking with a dog, opt for the Ridge Trail to avoid the metal stairs.
- Bring a swimsuit and towel if you want to swim at the Upper Falls — it’s a great way to cool off after the climb.
- Check the US Forest Service Page for trail updates and closures.
- Some maps (like AllTrails) may not reflect the new trail layout with both out-and-back and loop options.
While the main trail takes about an hour to complete, the best way to experience this hike is to slow down so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery. Depending on which trails you choose and your fitness level, you could easily spend 3 to 5 hours soaking in the area’s beauty!
